Reduce, Reuse... Give To The Dog?

Entertaining our dogs can sometimes be a challenge, particularly if they LOVE to be active and you can't get out with them (like in the recent stormy weather!). However, it is an important part of having a dog, and can stop them from developing some problematic behaviour, such as excessive barking or destroying the furniture.

There are some fantastic options out there that make this an awful lot easier, about which you can read more in our blog, '5 Ways To Keep Your Dog Happy'. But, did you know that you can use things you already have in the house to keep your dog busy?

Here are our top three ways you can get your pup's brain turning, without breaking the bank.

1) The Towel Burrito

If you live with a dog in the UK, you most likely have a couple of towels that you use just for the dog. Grab a clean one, and lay it out on the floor in front of you. Lay a couple of treats or dry kibbles along the short edge of the towel, and then roll the end over to cover up the treats. Scatter a couple more biscuits along that edge, and then roll it over again. Repeat until you get to the end of the towel, and then give it to your dog!

If they haven't experienced one of these before, you may need to help them out so they get the basic idea. Unroll the first layer with them, and then lift up the middle of the burrito so they can get their nose under and start snuffling. You may need to do this a couple of times until they get the hang of it!

2) Toilet Roll Bonanza

This is a great way to use up any old toilet roll inners before you recycle them. Simply slot them into a box, end down. The box can be tupperware or cardboard, whatever you have lying around! Then just scatter your dog's kibble or treats across and in between the tubes, and watch them go!

Some dogs like to pick out each tube, some like to stretch their tongue to the bottom, and some like to cause mayhem by tipping the whole box upside down. How does your dog react to this? Let us know below!

3) Bottle Biscuits

This is by far the easiest way to entertain your dog - and all you need is a plastic bottle or carton. Make sure it's washed out first, so that you don't risk your pup ingesting any traces of fizzy drinks or gone-off milk, and then just pop some treats or kibble inside. Your dog can then knock it about to get the treats to fall out - and you've made your own puzzle feeder!

You can make it a bit easier, if your pup struggles with this one, by cutting a hole into the side of the bottle - just make sure you sand it down first to avoid them cutting their nose or the paws on it.
